Legacy Lakes: Get to know Science Hill’s charming new venue
Something big is brewing in Science Hill.
The 17-acre spread once known as Abby’s Lake has a new name — Legacy Lakes — and a new owner with a bold plan to revitalize the former event venue.
Photographer Angela Vaught bought the property in September. Just about everyone in Pulaski County knows her name and her work.
For more than 20 years, the Eubank native has captured our best angles and sweetest memories. From newborn, Santa, prom and senior pictures to classic portraits, Angela has been there to make time stand still for local families. Countless young couples have depended on her to turn their dream weddings into beautiful, lasting images.
Yes, you know Angela Vaught. What you don’t know, though, is that for years she has been working toward her own dream — a premier, family-friendly event venue set amid a backdrop of Pulaski County’s natural beauty. When the former Abby’s Lake went up for sale, she knew she’d found her place.
“I’d drive by here every day over the years and so many times I’d think, man, I wish that place was mine,” she said.
She and her daughter Kade Vaught-Mincey have already moved Angela Vaught Photography, their main business and a longtime community fixture. The photo studio was on Enterprise Drive behind Somerset Mall for years.
Angela will continue her holiday studio and visits with Santa at Somerset Mall. She and her daughter look forward to the Santa season all year. Making Christmas merry for local kids and families means everything to them.
“Santa at the mall is a tradition I would never stop doing,” she said. “Santa has my heart.”
At Legacy Lakes, Angela plans to reopen the venue for events such as weddings, parties, business meetings, corporate retreats, and more. She will work in phases, as she plans to update and renovate parts of the property. She is already booking wedding packages for the facility with add-on options such as overnight stays, photos, officiant and more.
Legacy Lakes is certainly photogenic. Just outside Somerset off Highway 27, it’s nestled in a lush, green valley with two small lakes. Visitors can cross a bridge to a gazebo in the center of the larger lake. At sunset, the whole valley is awash in gold. It’s the kind of lighting that makes everything seem magical — especially to the camera.
The house also lends itself to elegant images. It has two kitchens, a large bar with a seating area, a bridal suite and a groom’s suite. The main reception and seating area has gleaming hardwood floors, a huge stone fireplace and a balcony overlooking the main floor. Outside, there is a pool and a large gazebo with festive lighting.
“She’s dreamed of having a place like this for years,” said Angela’s daughter and sidekick, Kade. A fine photographer in her own right, Kade has worked side-by-side with her mom for six years. “She’s been dreaming of opening a wedding venue since before Dad died. He was going to retire and be her maintenance man.”
Angela’s husband, Paul Vaught, died after a heart attack in 2010.
“Even though she’s a widow, she still did it,” Kade said proudly. “She worked hard for it.”
